It is now well known that citation counts are important to judge one's research activity. Is it good to cite one's previous works? Will it be viewed as an act of advertisement or self-promotion?
@ To my mind citation of own work should not be viewed as self promotion. As some times it is necessary to cite your own work for continuity. Others will cite your work only when it linked to their research area. If someone has studied the morphology then cytology followed by biochemical and molecular details of a species. One can cite morphological work in cytology. Both morphology and cytology can be cited in Biochemical article and similarly all morphology, cytology and biochemical can be cited in molecular studied of the species. This is what I mean to say continuity.
Just treat it as any other citation. If some of your previous publications are relevant for your current publication than of course you can and should cite them. "Forced" self-citation of not so relevant previous publications will look a bit silly.
