In a simple term the double term frequency is mostly generated based on the non-linear characteristics either using electro-optic modulators (such as MZM) or nonlinear characteristics of the fibre itself as Alexander gave you a reference. Both methods that I mentioned generate the second order harmonics (in the case of using electro-optic higher order harmonics can be generated). You need to specify which of the two methods you want to adapt and highlight the advantage and disadvantage of each method. Each one can be used for different applications.
