I'm planning to start with a project of a laboratory that makes microbiological analysis to food industry. I'm plan to buy some second-hand equipment to make less hard the initial investment. Is it recommended? Wich providers are recommended?
Hi Esteban, it makes a lot of sense to buy second hand. There are a lot of suppliers out there, and it really depends on who has the equipment you need as to which you choose. We have purchased from the US, Korea, UK.....
You need to make sure the supplier has tested the equipment, and ideally it has been refurbished by them. This ensures that they are able to test its functionality and that they know it is working. (Unless it is REALLY cheap and you can freely return it if it doesnt work!)
If possible check some references from the supplier, and see that they offer a good returns policy if you find that actually the equipment is broken. (Shipping equipment can be VERY expensive).
When you enter into a dialog with the supplier, see how cooperative they are and if you get the feel that they know what they are doing!
Be aware that they will not know the true history of the item, so, depending on you application it may actually have at some point been contaminated with hazardous materials.
Make sure you are able to get a good manual & instructions for the item, and that you know it will do what you want. As much of the equipment will be outdated.
The use of second hand instruments depends on their efficiency and accuracy. You should check them for these first. If they're still good, you can buy and use them. I already used second - hand instruments in my lab.
