Hi Kruti,

ImageJ is developed for medical related issues and it can display 3d images and can do simple image processing tasks.

There are more advanced software for oils spill detection and analysis than ImageJ some of them are free of charge such as QGIS with ORfeo Toolbox. Another more advanced commercial software such as ENVI and ERDAS Imagine. For more information about oil spill detection and other sea water parameters calculation check the following two papers which can be downloaded from my ResearchGate web site:

1- Sea water chlorophyll-a estimation using hyperspectral images and supervised Artificial Neural Network

2- Monitoring water quality in the coastal area of Tripoli (Lebanon) using high-resolution satellite data

I also agree that ImageJ might be tricky to use for oil spill detection as it is not primarily made for that. However, ImageJ does have interesting tools for image analysis and thus if you have very contrasted pictures (high ratio contrast oil/water whatever if it is visible light, infrared, etc, ...) it might be possible to use the same technique than for particle counting and detection (see video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQAZ--c9YfI) or measure area in histological tissu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLfVSWcxMKw). I did use ImageJ to count oil droplet in water from picture made by microscope in visible light. But that also mean you need to made a method and validate it.

Thank you geoffrey and M. Awad, I got to know that NASA is using ImageJ for oceanography and I think they have customized ImageJ for oceanography Is there any way I can find out the application for which they are using ImageJ?

I found this 2 links if you haven´t found yet. The best is may be just email them. They are usually quite helpful as long it is in public domain.
