What are the differences between Scope Creep and Gold Plating in Project Management.
Often these two are confusing and misleading.
Can we discuss it with real time examples?
What are their effect on scope baseline?
If so, do we need change request to deal with it?
Hi Mohammed, please check on www.pmi.org. Project Management Institute provide better clarification. Scope creep is carrying out work which is not in the project charter or brief (which is already approved by sponsor). Gold plating is overdoing what client requested for. Usually, client requirements should be satisfied when the project is finished. For example, when the client requested for sealed road and project manager builds a concrete pavement, then it is gold-plating.

You are adding some extra features and functions to the scope in a controlled manner in scope creep (Its an authorized change as per customer requirement). Whereas, in Gold plating you are trying to please the customer through unwanted addition of feature and function, where he may like it or dislike it.

On one hand Gold-plating is an attempt of the project team to please the customer by exceeding its expectations. For instance with gold-plating, even if the clients requirements are reached, the project team tries to add not mandatory or necessary features not requested by the customer in an attempt to increase its satisfaction even if it means diminishing the returns.
Scope creep, on the other hand, refers to various changes, continuous or uncontrolled growth of the project scope. Scope creep affects the scope of the whole project. Scope creep is generally considered as harmful to the project.
