Dear Afjal,

My tips are:

Write about something that interests you

Only write when you feel you have something you want to communicate

Work with one co author and decide who is going to lead

Don't set your sights too low or too high with the journal/article style that you choose then do a keyword search of that journal for the last 10 years and incorporate appropriate citations

Only include one main idea per paper

Socialise your writing by first presenting your ideas at a conference and getting feedback

Learn the basic principles of academic writing, especially paragraph writing and argumentation

Include some primary research: make sure it is well done

Be aware of prejudices against poor grammar: have your article proofread if necessary. Also ensure you conform to the style of the journal.

Sell your main idea in your title, abstract, introduction and conclusion because these will be read first. Make sure these four parts are well written.

Aim for a major rewrite, not an immediate acceptance

Start writing your next paper before the review process is finished

Write concisely, i.e. brief yet comprehensive.

Have some fun :) Like your work, your thesis, your papers as your own kids.... Cherish it. Enjoy writing it.

Carefully select you study area and/or research question to check up if you have enough data/materials.

Do your research within the scope of the research.

Download as much as possible literature (pdfs of any related papers) from any sources.

Select good software (if your domain is technical). Think about methods of experiment. Learn software if necessary.

Submit preliminary results to journals. Do not wait until you write the whole thesis. Publish your work step-by-step, by parts.

Consult your colleagues.
