Researchers have shown that gene therapy can help people with β-thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that cripples the oxygen-carrying protein called hemoglobin, BBC reports. An international team delivered a corrective gene into blood stem cells taken from patients, then reinfused the cells into the body. Fifteen of 22 patients no longer require blood transfusions and others need them less often, the scientists reported yesterday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
