In regard of Rosen's text I cannot say a thing. I never read it.

Nevertheless, about the connections between organic and social life, I could point to a philosopher that Erwin Schrödinger highlighted in the "Epilogue" of his What is Life?, and that he acknowledged as one of his main philosophical inspirations throughout his entire life: Arthur Schopenhauer.

Indeed, the "Epilogue: On Determinism and Free Will" roughly depicts something like the metaphysical foundations that Schrödinger thought for "consciousness" and "social life".

On his part, Schopenhauer always acknowledged to be inspired by Indian and Taoist philosophy –whether in general or in particular to organic life.
