Hello, anyone can share the model of school cooperative or students cooperative in your own country?
In Malaysia, we have school cooperative in secondary school (middle school), where the students gain experiences and knowledge about entrepreneurship. The students run the school coop by assisting the teachers in managing various activities such as buying and selling activities at the school coop mart, agriculture activities, laundry, cyber cafe and tourism. All those activities generates income to the school coop, and inculcate entrepreneurship to students.
In Ethiopia, there are students' unions in universities that are standing for the rights of students. They are also in charge of coordinating different activities, among many, such as sports competitions, graduation ceremonies, raising funds for different matters, and entertainment activities.
This is Great idea. We also had a cooperative store in college run by students. Even our Hostel Mess was run as a cooperative.
Absolutely, as highlighted Fikrineh Negash and Emmanuel V Murray , in our setting the Students Union (SU) is saddled with the responsibility of being the interface between the Students body of the University in matters affecting their academic, social, cultural and sporting life on campus. In performing its statutory functions as a students government, the Union is responsibly encouraged and at liberty to explore areas of augmenting in the provision social and sporting facilities and activities aimed at making the social life of the students interesting on campus. Also, the Union can explore other economic ventures such as the construction of a students center; comprising of shops which are let out and/ or run by the SU and other viable businesses; in a responsible and accountable manner; with all the statutory checks and balances as laid down in the University regulations and the SU constitution.
Very interesting and an important idea which is completely absent in Bangladesh whether school or college or University levels. Sometimes there are some students' body elected by the students in college or University to raise their voice to uphold their rights. Thank you.
