The quantity of samples depends on the methods used and organic load for the quantification of BOD. For eg. if selecting Wrinkler's method (APHA), you need at least 2 L for water having low COD. If the COD is high, you need less amount of water.

If you would like to do the BOD analysis by LDO probe or respiration method, 500-600ml sample will be sufficient.

I would advise you to first check the COD and according make dilutions for BOD. Generally BOD is around 45-60% of COD.

We found high relation (over 0.8) in combined sewer flow in wet weather conditions between BOD5 and COD, Total-N, organic-N, Total-P, organic-P, suspended solids, Total solids, volatile suspended solids and turbidity; just talking about conventional pollutants.

We normally try to extract 6 or more samples on a good storm event (with good dry antecedent period and an intense rain). If the storm was not so interesting or the sampling process had problems, you can also prepare a composite sample so you at least have mean values for this event.

It is interesting to achieve around 10 CSOs to be able to extract some statistics like Site Mean Concentration values and others, although minimum studies I saw had only 3 (but in various places). It will depend on what information you want to extract.
