Out of interest and as part of my MSc I am looking to write a "research grant proposal" (as part of an assignment) for a study using TMS to manipulate facial emotional recognition.
I understand from my research that the fusiform gyrus (face area) is not accessible with rTMS but was wondering if there are any other areas/pathways that rTMS can be applied to manipulate facial emotion recognition?

Below is a paper where authors targetted the right occipital face area (rOFA) and the face region of right somatosensory cortex (rSC) with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) while participants discriminated facial expressions.

I'm not good at the English language. anyway, I did not understand what you were asking, for example, manipulating facial muscles, or how to investigate areas of the central nervous system during emotional experience? the rTMS is mostly used for depression therapy or similar things related with the psychological medication. In other hand, the rTMS may result some side effects to the respective subjects (e.g. hearing problem, headache, etc.). Based on my experience, these kind of problems may affect the data quality and made some problem during analysis.
There are some papers which analyze the rTMS and emotion relationship.

I conduct research using rTMS for cognitive studies, which is a rapidly growing field. If safety screening and TMS protocols are followed rigorously people rarely experience side effects and if they do it is usually a minor tension headache when stimulating frontal regions due to facial muscles contracting.
For those that are interested I have been able to find some interesting articles about mimicry of emotions within the mPFC which supports emotion recognition and how the application of rTMS can enhance this.
