Looking through geometric design standards and text books from the last forty years or so, the values given for side friction generally seem very similar. How can this be if there was (is) no common method for the measurement of friction?
Road friction is measured in proxy by measuring skid resistance. There are a few standardized techniques, all of them uses a fifth wheel in some configuration. The fifth wheel is applied with skid in a number of optional techniques, and the reaction forces are measured and correlated to skid resistance and dynamic friction coefficient. We have modeled this attribute using reflectance spectrlcopy and imaging spectroscopy and succefully produced friction maps in high resolution.
