you are from mechanical background, so why you not started to think conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. There are many source to do work over on it, like wind energy, energy generation by frictions(Mechanical aspect),if material point of view, then piezoelectric devices.
Conversion of solar energy into electricity (not the direct method) , use of concave polished surface to concentrate solar power to a point on focus and if a metallic pipe containing some oil is placed ,it could get amazingly heated up and this can be used to make steam and then a steam engine can be used to convert this steam to mechanical energy with the help of turbines and then to electrical energy with the help of dynamo !!
