Based on the studies across the literature, it seems that in most cases renewable energy with storage option is the future solution to decarbonising electricity and transportation sectors . However, it is important to also look at the effect of the batteries we are using as storage option in renewable electricity systems. so my questions is:
Which storage option is environmentally the sustainable solution for renewable electricity generation systems?
I think that there is no single (and simple) answer. As for other aspects of energy production (e.g. which is the best electricity generation technology), probably the best solution could be a mix of multiple technologies, in order to exploit the best features of each of them, and at the same time limit their impacts.
Beside the current electricity storage solutions (hydro pumping, batteries) I think that interesting options will be power-to-gas and power-to-heat (with an integration between power grids and gas pipelines and/or district heating networks), and electricity storage in the batteries of cars.
Moreover, a better demand side management of the electricity users would lead to the possibility of lowering our need of storing electricity, which a think is the best solution overall. We come from a fossil-based society, where the consumption drives the production. We might think how and if we can (partially) switch to a logic where the consumption is driven by the renewable energy availability.

Storage is an energy strategy is a viable strategy from the environmental position. For large-scale electricity generation systems from the thermal dollar energy, the termia accumulation is an efficient and ecological strategy. When it comes to power generation from photovoltaic panels, it obviously puts these batteries are more aggressive with the environment. The point is that several investigations are inclined to improve the efficiency and to diminish the environmental damages of the electrical batteries.

Governments, utilities and industry will need to significantly increase storage capacity for renewable energy sources in order to encourage clean technologies to the extent that they can help to avoid the worst Impacts of climate change. In 2011, hydraulic pumped storage systems represent a capacity of nearly 100 GW worldwide. Today, these systems constitute the vast majority of total electricity storage capacity, but the storage facilities are diversifying, notably with the construction of high-capacity electrochemical batteries (40 GW of installed capacity are expected by 2030, mainly in Japan and the United States). Electrochemical batteries seem the most promising option for fixed or mobile storage. According to IDC Energy Insights, worldwide production of lithium-ion batteries has increased from 6,689 MWh in 2011 to 26,145 MWh in 2015. According to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency, 150 GW of battery storage and 325 GW of hydro-electric storage by pumping would be needed by 2030 so that the world can raise the world's share of energy sources, Renewable energy to 45% by 2030. The most promising avenue for the storage of renewable energies is currently the so-called "power to gas", in other words the transformation of energy into gas. This transformation is done through electrolysis, which transforms energy into hydrogen. It has many advantages. First, it is reversible thanks to the fuel cell, which transforms hydrogen into electricity. Thereafter, the product gas can be used either as pure gas or mixed with natural gas. Hydrogen is easy to store, transport and value. It can be stored in large volumes, for long periods and transported to be transformed again into electricity, locally. Mixed with natural gas, hydrogen can be exploited as fuel for vehicle fleets or injected into the natural gas network for the heating of buildings for example.

Grid-scale storage needs to be cheap. There are people looking at the potential for used car batteries to be used for the grid.

To my knowledge, hydrogen is NEITHER easy to store, NOR easy to transport. Not to mention its' current leakage rate from the best available tanks (~1% per day).
As for the subject of question, the most environmentally friendly is hydropower storage. But it should be erected in the appropriate areas (e.g. mountain areas).

Do not be surprised with my previous comment. You will find on the net all explanations on transport, distribution and storage of hydrogen. Hydrogen can be compressed, liquefied, or chemically combined. Today, hydrogen is transported from the point of production to the point of use via pipeline, over the road in cryogenic liquid tanker trucks or gaseous tube trailers, or by rail or barge. Hydrogen used in portable or stationary applications can be delivered by truck to a storage facility or in cylinders, similar to the propane used for gas grills, or in cartridges that would resemble a battery.
