After the treatment of char or biochar its efficieny will surely increased. The selection of chemical to treat the biochar depends on the property of biochar. if incresing basic strength will increase the efficiency then the chemical should be basic nature as (Hydroxides of Na and K) and if increasing acidic strength will increase the efficiency the the chemical should be atrong acid. the attached article will also help you....

Interesting approach... I normally think on Ion Exchange nitrate selective resins / adsorbents or reverse osmosis for industrial applications, waste is always discussed up front as customer needs to recirculate some effluents, specially to cooling towers, or use evaporation ponds... nitrate removal using plants is desirable but space is more than available sometimes
in industrial applications... can you comment if with this biochar aproach will be a single use or if it can be reactivated? Great success in your research
