I have some published papers on record, however, my paper review history has been on the lower side, any suggestions on how to get more paper review invites, or directly contact the journal can also be a viable approach, if so, which journal is a good start? my interest areas include CNT synthesis/applications, carbon hybrid materials as well as their synthesis and applications, Thank you in advance.

Some potential journals to target for your interests include Carbon, ACS Nano, Journal of Materials Chemistry A, and Advanced Materials. Attending conferences and workshops in your field helps you connect with potential collaborators and editors who may know your work and collaborate with you.

If you believe you are an expert of a particular field and if you have considerable publication history you can register yourself as reviewer for open access journals. You can open an account on Elsevier reviewer hub and chose the journals of your choice (expertise) for which you can do the reviewer job. There you will also find several tutorials and videos designed for reviewers to perform fair and good peer review of articles.
In my experience ACS and RSC look for some previous publication history with them while sending articles for review.
If you want official record of your review assignments then each time connect your ORCID ID with the assigned job. It will create your peer review record.

Hello Daniel, the answers above are very good. I will only cover the parts they don't mention:
1) quickest way is to ask your advisor or other professors within your PhD committee to invite you for paper reviewing (they may are the editors of some journals in your fields, just ask them. The professors normally receive dozens of paper review requests every week and due to tight schedule of theirs, they may turn down a lot of these requests. I am sure they are willing to suggest you to review some of the requests)
2) try open access journals in MDPI. They are much more friendly than ACS, RSC to young, unknown researchers (I published 2 papers in a RSC journal and contacted the editor several times, they always replied to me politely like we will contact you when we have a right manuscript to your field. I waited 1.5 years but never received any review invitation. So if you are not really famous as a researcher, better try open access journals in MDPI. I received dozens requests for paper reviewing immediately after registration in the past 2-3 months).
