Part of my work is the creation of species inventories by analyzing the relevant literature. Reasons of this are to have an update information for the area i work, to have such lists with coordinates (if possible for all data) in order to be used in maritime spatial planning and for comparisons with neighbour areas. Apart from the traditional statistical analysis (number of species per class, family, etc.), any zoogeographical analysis (after having such a list for the larger area), habitat analysis (where these have been found in terms of substrate) which other analysis could be included in such a work in order to become more modern and attactive? Do taxonomic diversity indices (Δ+, Λ+) can be used for comparison with larger datasets (e.c. local species list with Mediterranean species list)?
Any idea - proposition is welcome.

It could be interesting calculate The Historical Biodiversity Index (HBI) (see Boero & Bonsdorff 2007): the ratio between the species that have been found in a sampling session from a given habitat type (realised biodiversity) and the species that should be found at that habitat type, based on previous knowledge (potential biodiversity).

The "....should be found..." needs some specification. SDM predicted presence? Historically recorded as present, but currently absent? In the latter case overlays of historical and contemporary presence in grid format per species, for all species, per species group?

Cinzia, the index you propose is interesting. Can this be applied for a region (e.c. Cretan Sea malacofauna from Forbes to nowdays) instead of habitat ? My case (marine malacofauna of Crete - literature review and new data) is a regional approach - as data are coming from different sources.
Hein, yes, SDM is potential a tool IF you have spatial information (georeferenced) for you data. Also, for marine works, the spatial resolution for the envirodata are quite coarse for a local study.

And what if the habitat information is lacking from the sources ? As an example, i have 55 papers with mollusca information as species list. 10% of the have information on the habitat. Could the historical index be calculated by using the current species number of the region in comparison to each paper that provide species information (cumulating publication after publication) ?
It would be better have the information on habitat , but you could also statistically compare what was in the same region decades ago with the last decades.
SDM is a very tool for such studies. We did it for Cycas beddomei in South India. Not only spatial data but extensive field explorations in inventory will be of immense help in this regard. However, microlevel envirodatasets are must to have precise outcome.
