During nanoparticle synthesis, polycrystalline NPs instead of monocrystalline NPs tend to dominate as particle size grows larger. How to determine the active surface area of polycrystalline NPs? Can we calculate the area according to the particle size and overall shape (e.g., semisphere)? I might get the definition wrong but I thought polycrystalline means there are grain boundaries. Do these boundaries provide active surface, or they are not exposed on the surface?
