Yes, I agree absolutely that "preprint" has no fixed meaning or scientific normative framework, it is useful, sometimes to let discuss the own paper by others with similar or higher competence. RG had began a campaign that it is absolutely necessary to put preprints up for discussion. That's anyone's choice, of course. Only if a high-ranking journal is ready to publish, it should not be published before. You have to make a statement about this. That's a good thing. But most of the time you work in a scientific group, and for younger scientists there are more and more experienced colleagues important who - in my opinion - are much more relevant in their judgement, because they have direct experience with the focus of the reasearch work.
