Hello

What is the basis of the electrode dipped electrolyte in the reference electrode?

In the silver-silver chloride reference electrode, the electrode is silver and the electrolyte is silver chloride.

In saturated calomel electrode, platinum wire is contacted with a paste of mercury and mercury chloride and potassium chloride solution is filled in the rest of the area.

Please can anyone explain, why is it like this? what is the design procedure of the reference electrode?

You need to have a stable redox couple with a well-known potential. In case of Ag/AgCl electrode you have [Ag+] which is strictly defined by the dissolution constant while the "concentration" of Ag metal is taken as 1. In case of Hg/Hg2Cl2 everything is the same. Hg(2+) concentration stays constant no matter what and it will define the redox potential according to the Nernst equation. For the calomel electrode, Pt is just a corrosion-resistant wire.
