For iron biofortification in wheat and rice, foliar application of Fe chemicals (e.g. FeSO4 or EDTA-Fe) is feasible in sustainable agriculture. However, the recommended foliar Fe concentration is unclear, could you guys provide some reference about it. So appreciate it if you could answer the question.
To identify micronutrient deficiency the foliar analysis is very useful.
In alkaline soils crops like wheat and rice can show micronutrent deficiency commonly zinc, iron and boron.
Take at least 24 leaves and dry them.
These dried leaves and a specialized laboratory can ash the leaves which are analyzyed by atomic spectrometer.
When iron has 50 ppm or more zinc 25 ppm or more and boron 15 ppm more the levels would be sufficient of good yields.
If the levels were inferior to those levels supplementation would like improve the corp yield and quality.
Chelated iron, zinc and boron would be best applied 30 cm and at the emergence of spiles for crops like wheat or rice.
Iron deficiency is rarely ever an issue if the pH is less than 7.3 and it is amost alsways a big issue at pH 7.8 or higher.
The use of some sulur and ammoniated fertilizers can be very helpful in that soil condition.
Soil pH is a good place to start and also a complete soil nutrient profile if it is possible.
The use of the folair profile can be added to fine tune your program.
Iron chlorosis is usually interveinal and found at plant tops the reason being the immobile nature of iron in the plant.
For foliar application the chelate is preferred and this can give a rapid restoration from chlorosis symptoms. The reaction can occure is 3 days to a week and if the symptom removal is not complete apply foliar again until no symptoms appear.
Sometimes 2 to 3 applications are needed for full effect.
Professor Hira Singh brings up the nature of iron chlorosis defiency having a soil component of great importance.
Note the top symptoms showing the immobility of the iron and also the patchy symptom pattern in the fields that reflect the underlying soil issues.
Precision agriculture technique can be used to uniform the fields to avoid this otherwise the whole field can be treated foliarly.
If early and agressive rooting can be favored this issues can be largely avoided.
EDTA is the common chelator used in conventional iron foliar treatment and humic and fulvic acids can be very useful in mobilizing the element.

Application of iron to crops is not mandatory.To be given to crops if the soil is found to be deficit or the crop show deficiency symptoms.At tamilnadu state in India the practice is to apply ferrous sulphate 25 kg/ha as soil application or foliar spray at 0.5 %.
