Nanotechnology has made tremendous growth in every domains of science and technology. However, nanotoxicity has been become the serious issue. How to minimize the toxicity of nanomaterials in R&D activities?
Check FDA regulations on nanotoxicity. It pertains mainly on insoluble particles and started with gold nanoparticles.

Te general rule of thumb is:
"If the material has slight toxicity concern at bulk level, the toxicity will be significantly higher at nanoscale simply because of increased surface to volume ratio. If, however, the material is classified as GRAS and non-toxic chopping it down to nano should not impose any toxicity concerns."
In nature we have a lot of nontoxic nanomaterials including amino acids, nucleic acids, etc.

Mammalian cell lines can be used to check toxicity concerns. It has been seen that nanoparticles of zinc and iron appear quite safe however too tiny size and amount of loaded drug or a test molecules matter.
