Hi. its may be a very simple question. But I am struggling to find good help with it in books and theoratical material. I want to generate real-valued QAM signals for intensity-modulated-direct-detection (IMDD) systems. I found some papers on DMT but I was wondering if someone can direct me towards literature related to generation of real-valued QAM signals (without the use of OFDM/DMT, just QAM). Thanks a lot

As per my understanding, QAM modulation always has an In-phase components and a Quadrature component, so to generate a complex signal (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/quadrature-amplitude-modulation). I tried to look for real-valued QAM, but did not find any literature in this topic!
I don't know what simulator you are using, but may be you can define the constellation of your modulation in a table, then select values from it! This might not be the most appropriate way to do, but could help.
