I cannot seem to get this to work. Can anyone advise me on how to do this? This is such a simple graph but just because the x-axis is in dates, it messes everything up!
After trying loads, I have ended up with using the following code, but still, it does not display any plot. At least the axes appeared, which is a huge improvement over other codes:

since you use nonstandard format for date, same explicit format must be supplied in the xlim:
xlim=as.Date(c("01/10/2011", "31/08/2013"), "%d/%m/%Y")
Now on the x-axis, it wouldn't display the full date. Only years....
Is there any way to make it display full date and also control the interval of tick labels?
Let's say i want it to display "01/01/2012", "01/07/2012", "01/01/2013", "01/07/2013".
in the plot() add xaxt="n" and the after the plot add the following new line of code for custom labels:
axis(side=1, at=as.Date(c("01/01/2012", "01/07/2012", "01/01/2013", "01/07/2013"),'%d/%m/%Y'), labels=c("01/01/2012", "01/07/2012", "01/01/2013", "01/07/2013"))
