I am not familiar with the grid package. I usually use "plot" (graphics) to show data and set the arguments xlim and ylim to define the visible parts of the x- and y-axes. I would like to this for plotting hexbin-objects as well. Unfortunatey, the plot method for these objects do not provide xlim and ylim. I assume that this will require to fiddle around with Viewports. Does anyone have a solution?

Consider using the ggplot2 package, which has hexagonal binning (stat_binhex) as well as powerful graphing capabilities, including xlim etc.
I'm not familiar with the hexbin package. What happens if you set the xlim = c(min(x), max(x)) and ylim = min(y) max(y))?
This works. The only problem is that the plot does not fill the plotting area, supposedly to keep the aspect ratio in order to give well-shaped hexagons. It's like in true life: solving one problem creates two others :-)
My recent "solution" is now to draw the bins manually. This is most flexible, I can plot them into my old standard plots (package:graphics - not gplot, grid, and friends). I can ensure "nices" hexagons using par("din") and do all the stuff I want. In case I will fall into grid graphics I can very easily adopt it, keeping this flexibility. NB: My work-around is just for style="colorscale".

While I don't have a complete picture of the plot, probably because I haven't tried that one, the data may only span part of area that the procedure wants to use. I ahve in the past adopted the "brute force" method of creating a pseudo margin parameter and then adding that to the limits. I then change that until I get something that works.
If I have direct access to the graphics objects that are being plotted, then I can use those in the min/max suggestion above.
It sounds like you have a bit more elegant solution.
