Dear all,

It has been over 12 years I have been working in the fields of Ecology and Environmental sciences and currently I am struggling to find the correct term for a manuscript we just received revisions.

Along the manuscript we use few times the term "Atmosphere-Ecosystem interface", refering to the gas and particle exchange between the atmosphere and the biotic/abiotic components of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

However, one reviewer came with a valid point. "The term ecosystem includes, at least, part of the atmosphere".

Which single term could be used to refer to the global Terrestrial and Aquatic ecosystems but excluding the atmosphere component?

Biosphere is not an option either as it considers the atmosphere as well as one of its components.

The reviewer suggests using "atmosphere - terrestrial biosphere interaction", however this would exclude the aquatic systems.

Happy to discuss,

Thanks!

Albert.
