I'm going to adapt a questionnaire. The original questionnaire advised gauging on the 7likert scale. I wish to measure the items on 5-likert scale. I wish to rephrase the statements of items. Which statistical test must I apply and why?
If you re-word the items, then you need to do a full assessment of both reliability and validity. For reliability you should, at a minimum, assess coefficient alpha, and probably do either exploratory or confirmatory factor analysis. For validity, you should look up the basic concept of construct validity and the tests that are associated with it.
I'm sincerely grateful, professor. CFA and the report of EFA are mandatory for scale adaption.
It is possible to develop a 5 point or 3 point scale from 7 point scale. Generally, for any likert scale, there will be equal number of negative and positive options with one neutral option. Going by this understanding, for each item there are 7 options in which 3 has to be positive, 3 has to be negative and one has to be neutral. So, the possible scales are -3, -2, -1, 0, 1,2,3 . If the scales are like this, then take -3 and -2 as -2 for your five point scale and similarly, 2 and 3 as 2.
How are the scores given for your 7 point scale??
