We considering purchase of Sciex QTOF and Thermo Exploris 120 MS for unknown compound screen (CECs), id, and quantification in water matrix, at low conc. etc. Which one would be most suitable?
TOF has patented SWATH for virtually ALL MRMs, (via data mining), while Orbitrap has HIGH mass resolution.

QTOF has a better velocity in acquisition and more sensitive for target analyses, Orbitrap is slower but more accurate (for exact mass). You can use both of them. In my experience with Orbitrap, there are no problems in performing also target analyses but there are more possibilities of carrying out experiments for non target
