Write a fiction and you will get royalty. In case of research publication, the readership is very limited and therefore it is difficult to get monetary benefit unless you publish your own work.
Well, the production of good quality books is expensive. They then have to be stored, distributed, put out in bookshops which have pay rent, and hire staff and so on....
Add to that the fact that most academic works sell very few copies, and you're expecting rather a lot if you want paying! This is why, traditionally, academics have willingly given up their copyrights to publishers of books and high quality journals.
You always have the option of sending your manuscript to a commercial publisher. If they say "yes" all well and good. If it's "no" find an academic publisher quick! But don't expect paying as well....
