If you square the PSD, then you get the corresponding component's energy spectrum. There is this theory for homogeneous isotropic turbulence, which displays typical feature of the energy spectrum and this is often used to check the accuracy of numerical methods and resolution. Measured or computed energy spectrum is often also used to quantify inhomogenity of developed flows. You can see this discussed in the books on turbulence. Computational aspect is mostly in the literature and to some extent, in my book: High Accuracy Computing Method (CUP, 2013)

I agree, I just add that the power spectra is a way to see specific peaks at certain wavenumbers that can be easily converted in energy at flow scale of corresponding length
