Phosphates are one of the protective coatings made over iron. Used as both static and dynamic applications on iron metal. Either in the form of paints or dissolved phosphates in water for process system requirement may be adopted.

Phosphate coatings are used on steel parts for corrosion resistance, lubrication, or as a foundation for subsequent coatings or painting. Phosphate coatings are often used to provide corrosion resistance—however, phosphate coatings alone do not provide this because the coating is porous, so oil or another sealer are used to achieve corrosion resistance. Zinc and manganese coatings are used to help break in components subject to wear and help prevent galling.

Advantages

Zinc phosphate coatings are frequently used in conjunction with sodium stearate (soap) to form a lubrication layer in cold and hot forging. The zinc phosphate is abrasive, and it is the soap which performs the actual lubrication and must be thick enough to prevent substantial contact between the metal forming dies and phosphate crystals.

Disadvantages

However, the utilization of iron (III) phosphate leads to a number of problems, e.g., the deposition of the phosphated metal that may cause discoloration in the coating.
