This is a well known problem with carbohydrates and sulfuric acid. I had a high school chemistry experiment (in 1965) where we dumped sulfuric into a beaker of sugar and watched a carbon worm emerge from the beaker. Since you haven't given experimental details, I can only comment on what you have given.
It would seem your choices are 1 another acid, or 2 more dilute sulfuric (it is looking for water; not sure how dilute you would need to go). In any case you have to stop the carbohydrate from being a source of water for the sulfuric.
