If a student does not have a clear idea of what things they like to do and how that may translate into a professional career, they will have difficulty making career decisions. If they are overwhelmed by choices and/or are looking for the one 'correct' answer on what career to pursue (and are paralyzed by making a decision), they will have tremendous problems with addressing career choices. A student must be self-aware, able to use objective criteria to narrow down decision alternatives, understand that there are many different paths that can take you to a specific career, and most importantly, a student must have a strong sense of self-confidence and self-worth. Without these characteristics, a student will have difficulty making career decisions.

I agree with Eric's comments, and also would add that students must be able to acknowledge and be able to manage other sources of influence impacting their decision making. One of the research projects I worked on as part of my course work in the Lifespan and Digital Communication program I am currently in focused on factors that influence career decision making across the lifespan. Family is a strong influence at all stages, but for younger people interests and media are also very influential in their decision making process.

If students don't have a clear sense of what they are interested in , what they are good at and what they value, as well as having a realistic understanding of the world and work and an understanding or openness to acceptance the consequences of their decisions and how they might be impacted in the future, they continue to be fearful of making irreparable mistakes and remain indecisive about choosing majors and careers. We address much of this in our Major and Career Exploration courses. Students consistently report that the course is helpful to them in navigating the process.
