Please can someone explain how to find precipitation volume fraction of a phase in an alloy. for example, Al3Ti in Al-Ti alloy system. Can you explain how find out the volume fraction of the phase in the binary system
In metallurgy, the volume fraction of a phase is determined from micrographs of polished sections by finding and summing up the areas of these phases in the picture; the volume fraction of a phase in a material is the ratio of the summary area of the desired phase in the picture to the total area of this picture.
Previously, the areas of the phase in the picture were determined manually (the picture was divided into small squares and the number of corresponding squares was counted), but now there are special computer programs for pictures processing for this.
The more contrasting the image of the phase in the picture, the more accurately and easier it is to determine its amount. For this reason, section etching is used in optical microscopy. It is even better to use SEM for phase analysis, which gives high magnification and excellent phase contrast in the picture.
You can easily use metallugraphy. After preparing the surface and etching using proper etchant, revealing the second phase in the matrix, you can calculate the fraction of the second phases. Use image analysis apps like image j. The the ration of the area of second phases to the area of the photo is the fraction of second phases. The more image you analysis using this method, the more concise results are achieved.
