Pre-dawn water potential is said to be a more reliable indicator of plant water status, since water potential is measured at a time when the plant is assumed to be in equilibrium with the soil water potential. Therefore, it would be less subjected to temperature and sunlight variability throughout the day. However, based on high correlations between midday and pre-dawn water potential measurements, some authors say that midday water potential can also adequately reflect differences between water regimes (Williams and Araujo 2002). Others even have found signifficant differences only when measuring at midday, suggesting that the midday measurement would be more representative of plant water status than pre-dawn (Mirás-Ávalos et al 2014). I would appreciate some advice for upcomming measurements, considering that due to time limitations only one of both measurements can be done (either pre-dawn or midday).
