One feature that I always thought would be super useful from a reference manager is the ability to organize references based on what I cited in a particular manuscript. In other words, being able to access manuscript bibliographies within, say, Mendeley.

For example, if wrote a paper and cited a number of other articles using the Mendeley add-in, it would be great if I could somehow see that list of references reflected in the Mendeley library. For instance, is there a way to link Word documents to Mendeley so you can sort/filter the Library by Works (like you can for Authors, or Journals, etc.)? Or is there perhaps another way to effectively do the same thing (e.g. syncing a folder in Mendeley with a Word document)?

Does anybody know if this is possible? I'm pretty married to Mendeley, but if other reference managers can do this (and Mendeley can't) it's the one feature that might actually get me to jump ship!

I should add that I've tried to create folders in Mendeley in the past for particular manuscripts and manually curate them. My experience has been that this is just too cumbersome and tedious to juggle during the writing process.
