As a chiropractor I see alot of patients with OA. It has been a speculation of mine that poor somatosensory control of joints can increase the progression of OA in affected joints. It is believed that joint stiffness results from poor input from large diametre (1a and 1b) afferent information leading to incerases in tone (gamma motor neurons) from the muscle spindle system and thus joint stiffness (brain and spinal cord cannot properly regulate its functiona dn stability in space as a result of poor information reaching the CNS with regards to spatial information and so clamps it down.) If movement is REQUIRED for proper somatosensory input (thus function/alignment), nutrition and transport of metabolic wastes, we have a scenario where the OA cascade can begin/exaggerated. Any thoughts or criticisms?
