Dear All,
Please help me understand the mechanism of polymerization of furfural alcohol when it is being used as a binder in Al2O3- C refractories. Also I want to know the secondary carbon deposition phenomena during its coking (firing at reducing atmosphere) at 1050 oC.

Furfuryl alcohol (not furfural) is the major source of vitreous carbon, also called glasslike carbon. It is a hard, brittle, shiny, non-graphitisable form of carbon. Using "vitreous carbon" or "glasslike carbon" as keywords, you'll find many papers about the carbonisation mechanisms and the resultant carbon structure and properties by heating poly-furfuryl alcohol in inert atmosphere.

I think the resultant of polymerization of phenolic resins is also amorphous carbon with sp2 hybridization. Am I right?

To be exact: polymerisation of phenolic resin gives, after pyrolysis, a highly disordered carbon in which sp2 has the main contribution, but coexists with a non-negligible part of sp3. From where the disorder. Please prefer "highly disordered" to "amorphous", as it is never totally amorphous. Doing XRD will lead to bands that are quite broad, but that are true diffraction bands, i.e., this is more than just a diffusion background. A "crystallite" size can indeed be calculated from XRD spectra, and the same applies for Raman. So it is not amorphous, but all small "crystallites" are disoriented with each other and there is no long-range ordering. The presence of sp3carbons in the bulk is related to the significant oxygen content in this kind of carbon material, and allows the disorientation through the disorder they induce.
