I am working on "polygonal faults" affecting a carbonate gas reservoir in Egypt. When I asked my manger for support, he asked me only one question, how do your research improve the company oil production?
I constructed a 3D structure model and applied some algorithms to estimate the permeability and transmissibility multiplier of the faults, which proved the ability of fluids to flow throught these faults zones. However, I still believe that there are stronger ideas that I have to work on.
Anyone have better ideas about the implication of these faults on the reservoir characterization?
I have dealt with polygonal faults in the shallow Niobrara of eastern Colorado in the US. The throw of the faults and the adjacent lithology can affect the trapping. In our case, we could have impermeable shale on down thrown side, counter regional to dip which would form a trapping mechanism. The spill point on individual reservoirs was controlled by the msgnitude of the throw. So the polygaona faults were a very important in terms of reservoir compartmentalisation.
Thank you for your answer, but I think that the polygonal faults in my field could act as a conduits for the fluid flow. We have a pressure points in two wells containing polygonal faults in between, and both show near pressure values.
Dear Munir : Try to make a comparison within the area between a multiple polygonal faults in-which the stresses may changes depend on the orientation of displacements and so on they can make change in the rock itself. compare your obtained results with the 61, 62 and 63 in your area. that in case of solely one rock of carbonates. if you have core samples try to measures the friction angle and cohesion of core samples in different boreholes.
