My first reaction was to write: don't read ABOUT the indigenous, read them instead. My second reaction is to recommend Ronald Niezen, THE ORIGINS of INDIGENISM: Human Rights and the Politics of Identity, Berkeley: University of California Press, 2003, for some broad historical perspective.
