until now i thought that the landsat 8 has daytime data only, but a few days ago i knew that it has nighttime data also. while we say that landsat passes from any point in almost at 10:30 AM local time, in this case how it can has nighttime?
Who has any reference that described this subject?
Can this nighttime data utilize to LST retrieval?

The Landsat is descending during the daytime, and ascending in the night. There is more information here and how to find and download the data: http://landsat.usgs.gov/search_and_order_nighttime_scenes.php
Hi Adel, Landsat 8 indeed takes images of the Earth during night ascending passes of the orbit. The last time I checked, OLI bands were rather noisy but TIRS bands were worth looking at and also possibly could be useful for deriving LST from Band 10 and Band 11.
If you want to search night time Landsat 8 scenes, the easiest would be to check out Earthexplorer.usgs.gov website that I have attached and follow the steps for accessing night time Landsat 8 scenes

Very useful - thanks for the information, but are the night time scenes only available for specific locations on request? For example - I drew a polygon over Ireland and the UK and searched for imagery over the last 3 months but the only night-time scenes for Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS :: Collection 1/Level 1 were over Rotterdam in the bottom of the image.
Dr. Cahalane, yes, nighttime Landsat scenes are acquired by special requests. I guess that is why you do not find any Landsat 8 night time scenes over Ireland and UK. However, if you look for nighttime scenes from L7 ETM+ and L4-5 TM you will find some old scenes. Follow the attached links for more info.

Thanks for the quick reply - I wanted to see if we could spot any of the bonfires in Belfast on the 11th July celebrations so historical data may not be of use. I will try previous years.
You have a better chance of spotting bonfire hotspots from space with VIIRS onboard Suomi NPP and MODIS onboard Terra/Aqua because of better temporal resolutions compared to Landsat. VIIRS with 375 m resolution is actually not bad in detecting thermal anomalies which in turn complements MODIS thermal anomaly detection. I tried to look at Belfast on 11th and 12th July. See if you can find something useful through NASA's Worldview.
