Dear Colleagues,

According to my understanding, in addition to SIMS and MALDI/TOF ambient (?) pressure plasma ionization is used for the characterization of polymers and their surfaces. If some of you have experience in such measurements, I would like to learn about the following aspects:

- as far as I know, both SIMS and plasma ionization can detect directly additives migrating to the surface of plastics. Do they yield similar fragmentation? How much quantitative are these methods with respect to types and amounts of various additives (e.g. antioxidants, lubricants)?

- Provided that relatively small amount of additives is on the surface of the polymers (e.g. freshly cleaned by solvent and dried in vacuo) is the plasma ionization technique capable of telling something about the polymer composition (as e.g. SIMS can)? According to my understanding MALDI/TOF cannot be used to characterize bulk polymers only dissolved and precipitated thin layers of polymers.

- Can plasma ionization detect changes in the surface composition of a polymer caused by low pressure plasma treatment?

Thanks in advance
