It is just a type of construction, like suspended roofs... it allows larger open spaces
What's the main advantage this type of construction?

Some of the advantages, I think, are:
- allows larger open spaces (less columns are needed)
- economy in material use
- aesthetically pleasing
Disadvantages:
- design is more complex (including that of the foundation)
- savings in materials could be offset by more costly design
