I am finding hard to inter-relate Mg/P molar ratio influence on P recovery. Since we already know that in struvite this ratio should be 1:1, but then why do we try to get the optimum ratio by increasing Mg dosing i.e. 2:1 etc?
So, in my view in this way we are increasing chances of other species to precipitate ?

Nitrogen and phosphorus cause environmental problems leading to environmental stress on aquatic ecosystems, such as eutrophication and toxicity. To counter these impacts, the use of advanced treatment processes is necessary to meet strict discharge regulations. An annual increase in the use of nutrients by society is observed while the world's reserves of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are limited. In view of their importance in all life, the recovery of these nutrients from wastewater has captured the attention of researchers and has become a very important area of research. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered to be one of the major phosphorus accumulation points with more than 1.3 million tonnes of phosphorus removal P per year via wastewater treatment worldwide. The recovery of P from wastewater could thus cover around 15 to 20% of the world's phosphorus demand. Therefore, wastewater treatment plants are now considered water resource recovery facilities, a place where the recovery and management of bio-waste are pursued.
Electrochemical processes can be used as a tertiary treatment for P removal. Nowadays, it also arouses the interest of researchers as a new tool for nutrient recovery processes such as electrodialysis, electrocoagulation, electrochemical magnesium dosing, etc. On the other hand, pilot-scale and large-scale applications still require further investigation and research.
The electrocoagulation technique can be applied to recover phosphorus in the form of vivianite from wastewater. In fact, the recovery of phosphorus in the form of vivianite, an innovative practice, has attracted considerable attention due to its natural ubiquity, ease of access, and predictable economic value. The proposed electrocoagulation process uses a sacrificial iron anode to produce ferrous ions formed upon the dissolution of the anode. These ions will react with phosphorus ions in the wastewater, in particular PO4(3−), HPO4(2−) and H2PO(4−), resulting in the formation of vivianite, Fe3(PO4)2, 8H2O, usable in different Application Types: Slow Release Fertilizer, Li-ion Battery, Paint. . .
Electrochemical modelling with PHREEQC was used to study the dissolution of the iron anode, the optimal conditions for the precipitation of vivianite, the factors limiting this formation and the monitoring of the precipitation process in
a complex wastewater matrix. PHREEQC has been shown to be a powerful tool for performing speciation calculations and evaluating the saturation index that determines the precipitation rate. The experimental part of this work covered the recovery of vivianite using the electrocoagulation method. This recovery was evaluated in laboratory reactors operated in batch mode and in continuous mode in order to evaluate, respectively, the recovery of vivianite as a new P recovery route and the kinetics of P, its precipitation at different pH values.
