I'm trying to digitise (and possibly modify) an existing paper-and-pencil cognitive test (the Trail-Making Test) for a research study. It will be used only for research purposes. Does anyone know whether permission from the original creator of the test is needed for something like this? Thank you in advance!

Hi! You do not need to ask for the author's permission under this specific use for research. However you should clarify in your results where the task comes from, meaning which research paradigm you're adapting and give the reasons for doing so in the way you chose to do it.
Another interesting point I'd like to add is that while it is true that you won't be able to generalize the results from this adapted test using the normative reference of the original TMT, it may not be that big of a problem. Say you're using this task in an experimental model of cognition, and you're focusing on the cognitive performance between each subject or groups, and not how they compare to the population. However, this hinders any future comparisons between your findings and other peoples'.
