What do people think about blind review vs. review internally to an editorial board (where the editors are experts)? I have heard that the former is considered a "superior" form of peer review, but that both are considered academic publications/journals and kinds of peer review. Is this true?
Note: I am a PhD student in theology, just in case field/background matters.
there are many kind of peer review: single-blind peer review, double-blind peer review, open peer review, it is true that this peer review is more superior than review internally in an editorial board, the main task of editorial board is to check the paper and confirm that the review is more ethical.
From me several books (in Farsi) have been published about scientific publishing and also peer review such as this one "Surviving Peer Review in Scientific Journals". But we could not be as straight as we are here in RG discussions. I mean there are many points that we can find them in dark side of journals and their peer review systems.
While all you wrote about peer review systems are correct and we can go on to talk about them in detail and open up the weaknesses/strengths of them, but in reality they may not be of much help,
For example ONE may lose everything, if a reviewer is dishonest, rejects that manuscript and then s/he (the reviewer) starts to work on it to send it to another journal. There are many scandals in this regard, just search RG discussions and see. Or those who have power in journals, such as editorial board members (that seems easily publish their own papers in the journals that they themselves work, also we have "predatory journals" that want your money, they say we have a strong and (mostly say blind and rigorous peer review) but upon your investigation you find out other things!
There are many subtle points in this regard, therefore my suggestion is to read the RG related discussions,
