PCR positive results indicate the presence of a particular gene in a sample. Even tough, the DNA extracted from enriched samples is not necessarily due to the presence of living bacterial cells. In fact, the cultures are populated by living cells, dead cells or injured and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells, but also free DNA and bacteriophages carrying the virulence factor genes which are the targets of the PCR.

Have you ever encountered this phenomena?

Why, in your experience, PCR positive yet culture negative results occur?
