It was recently brought to my attention lately that there exists nearly 30 classifications for defining a species, including the following;

Biological species concept

Cladistic species concept

Cohesion species concept

competition species concept

ecological species concept

evolutionary species concept

....

And the list continues on to the point of exhaustion on the part of the writer and the reader.

However, among this broad list, I believe the evolutionary species concept stands out as the most unifying; defining species as evolutionary units with similar lineages and evolutionary faits.

Questions?

What is the disadvantage of having so many definitions of a species?

For understanding speciation, which is the paramount definition?

What is the origin for having so many species definitions?

Which is the most unifying/limiting definition?
