Hi, I ran the IR spectra of 4 Chloro resorcinol standard (first image) which is consistent with the reported spectra. Also I ran the spectra(multiple times) of a sample of supposedly 4 Chloro resorcinol (second image), but I noticed that the two peaks at ~3400 cm^-1 in the standard spectra appear as one in the sample spectra, why does this happen? Is it ambient water? Or something regarding the equipment used? Thanks in advance.

The two OH bands are due to the lack of ability for the OH groups to freely hydrogen bond. This is due to the crystalline structure. The higher band will be associated with the OH ortho to the Cl due to the bonding restriction. The overall band shapes suggest the material in both samples is crystalline but less hindered bonding is taking place in the second one. The OH band shape still shows some hindering. The spectra in the 1300 -1000 cm-1 region are not clear enough to look for the phenolic-o-h stretch changes. Similarly there is no evidence of the 1640cm-1 band due to free water. A disturbing feature is the significant interference across the spectrum from the water vapour bands in both sample spectra. These could be due of course to someone standing (breathing/talking) next to the instrument whilst the sample is being run but not present when the background was being collected.
