Originality is always a foremost requirement in any research publication. All prestigious journals publication houses reject article if there is plagiarism. If research article is qualitative, more citations will be made by researchers.
Published research results should bring something new to science. You should have interesting and original ideas, and approach a given scientific issue with a head full of ideas.
it is the report of a study written by the researchers who actually did the study.
the researchers describe their hypothesis or research question and the purpose of the study.
the researchers detail their research methods.
the results of the research are reported.
the researchers interpret their results and discuss possible implications.
How can I Tell if the Article is Original Research?
There is no one way to easily tell if an article is a research article like there is for peer-reviewed articles in the Ulrich's database. The only way to be sure is to read the article to verify that it is written by the researchers and that they have explained all of their findings, in addition to listing their methodologies, results, and any conclusions based on the evidence collected.
All that being said, there are a few key indicators that will help you to quickly decide whether or not your article is based on original research.
View the PDF version so you can plainly see the major subdivisions that should be present in a research article: Literature Review or Background Methods Results Conclusions Discussion
Read through the abstract (summary) before you attempt to find the full-text PDF. The abstract of the article usually contains those subdivision headings where each of the key sections are summarized individually.
Use the checkbox with CINAHL's advanced search to only see articles that have been tagged as research articles.
Striving for novelty can be good if the purpose is to quickly advance a field's knowledge but in heavily saturated fields (e.g., psychology, management--I mention these two as I'm most familiar with them), the heavy emphasis on novelty can unintentionally fuel "sexy" or trendy research that never replicates.
If we're defining originality as something that is independently created by a researcher or team of researchers, then this is good as it deters plagiarism and endorses independent research. BUT, if we're mixing originality with novelty, then I think this just incentivizes people to look for new (often questionable) topics to research and never replicate prior findings, thus leading to a tsunami of false positives.
The originality of a research including the results as well as the writing of the article. The best original research in which the findings are reported for the first time in the literature.
